17th June The integrity of art Joseph Campbell claims that :proper art is static. It holds you in static arrest.” Starting from Aquinas’s view of integritas, he says “In the art moment the first moment is integritas, the one object set apart from all objects. This is a thing, and within that thing what is important is the relation of part to part and part to the whole, the rhythm, the rhythm of beauty. This is the key of all art. The rhythm is implicit in your own body. The rhythm before you is the rhythm of nature. It is the rhythm of your nature. (The Mythic Dimension, Creativity p, 187) How can rhythm be static? What is the relation of this integrity to Clark’s Ideal of Beauty?
